Turkey Signs BWM Convention

Turkey today (October 14, 2014) ratified the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention 2004, bringing the number of Contracting States to 43 countries, representing approximately 32.54% of the global merchant shipping tonnage, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) reports.

ICS: Oil Pollution Compensation Regime Threatened

The smooth running of the well-established global regime for compensation from oil pollution from ships may be under serious threat, due to a decision by governments to wind up the 1971 International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund (IOPCF), says the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the global trade association for shipowners.

Wärtsilä to Provide Gas Handling Systems for Largest Ethane Carriers

Samsung Heavy Industries has ordered Wärtsilä gas handling systems for a set of  six new 87,000 cm3 capacity very large ethane carriers (VLECs), being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries yard in South Korea, with an option for additional vessels within this series. The deliveries of the gas handling systems will commence in 2016.

Study: Moored Ship Behavior

During the 53rd Naval Engineering Spanish Congress, Siport21 has presented the results of a project to characterize the behavior of the moored ships in the Outer Port of A Coruña, using “GPSFlot”. A sophisticated GPS RTK system was used to measure the motions of moored vessels in six degrees of freedom with a high degree of accuracy. This equipment was developed by Siport21 as part of a R+D project.
